EXfood_ edible 3D printing

”EXfood” is the name we have given to our first creative action on edible 3D printing. If ”EX” means ‘outside’ or ‘beyond’, in relation to space or time, ”EXfood” takes us beyond food, combining design and technology. The process undertaken to get live 3d printing with edible material to work was a project of research, collaboration, design and fabrication.

In 2014 EXarchitects was part of Zinc Shower, a Meeting-Show generated from and for the Cultural and Creative Industries that brought together thousands of attendees and dozens of speakers, entrepreneurs, investors and media.

We made an explanation and tasting of the application of parametric design and digital fabrication tools to the creative industry. In the presentation, we printed three-dimensional figures with chocolate.

At the same time we projected a brief tour of EXarchitects’ experience in the different areas in which we work:

  • Architecture
  • Parametric design
  • Digital fabrication
  • Creative actions
  • Research

Research on edible materials, especially chocolate, for which we built a specific machine for tempering and obtaining the optimum crystallization temperature for 3D printing.

Collaboration in the development of the technology. The project has been possible thanks to the RepRap, Arduino and GitHub platforms and to the people working on the development of free hardware and software. We would like to highlight Jonathan Keep, designer of the latest variation of the delta printer we started from. All this would not have been impossible without the work of Alessandro Ranellucci, Erik Zalm and Johann C. Rocholl, the Unfoldy studio and Adrian Bowyer as founder of the RepRap movement.

We also owe the merit of the presentation to our closest collaborators: Matías Celdrán, Alicia Andrés, Juanma González and Rosalía Herrero.

Design of the edible materials, with the collaboration of Kedulce, the hardware, logos and printed pieces, the table, trays, cards, etc…

Manufacture of elements beyond architecture, of machinery that makes it possible to manufacture recipes designed in three dimensions and controlled by computer.
